Humanities and Social Sciences
About the Department
Humanities and Social Sciences are two major categories. Humanities is the study of the human condition by analytics, which includes literature, language, linguistics, arts, music, theater and visual art. Social Sciences is the study of the human condition by empiricism include sociology, psychology, history, education, economics, political science, and the like.
As of today, machines already do most of our arithmetic, check our spelling & grammar, draw our blueprints, gather all sorts of technical data, calculate probabilities, monitor market trends, and so on. Machines can do all this because most of these tasks require little or no genuine creativity, sense of values, sense of purpose, sense of connectedness with humanity, love, joy, or wisdom. If humanity were entirely replaced by machines, then there would be no need for knowledge of the humanities. But so long as human beings exist, and so long as human beings make decisions that affect the lives of millions of other people, humanities as a field of study is of primary importance.
Take a moment to think about what sort of knowledge falls under humanities: critical thinking, creative thinking, self-expression, self-knowledge, heuristic knowledge of our place in history, heuristic knowledge of our role in "the big picture" of Being, ethics, spirituality, social cooperation, and healing.
At Graphic Era Hill University we believe that humanities as a field of education would take us down a path leading not just to technical abilities needed to get a job, but also a path towards self-knowledge, holistic knowledge, and wisdom.
